The Good News about Being a Man: We’re harsh, unpleasant and we [some of us] love war.

Sometimes we have to be harsh and unpleasant to do tough jobs. John Wayne knew that.

It’s hard to find fault with John Wayne. He loved America, he was very clear in holding strong convictions and he believed in standing up to do what was right. He once said "In my acting, I have to identify with something in the character. The big tough boy on the side of right — that’s me. Simple themes. Same me from the nuances. All I do is sell sincerity and I’ve been selling the hell out of that ever since I started."

He lived his values, as we all should, as men. Here’s a great film clip to start your week off right.

And as horrible as war is, men are fascinated by it and with all its horror we find something in it to love. Some men have said that war is for men what childbirth is for women— it is something we do that we know others simply cannot love doing. For a good, solid treatment of this [controversial] assertion, enjoy this article by William Broyles. It’s long and very much worth the read.  I first read this while serving in Germany in 1984. As a young man who had never been in combat, it did fascinate me. Now, I’m not so sure, but it’s a very good read..

Why Men Love War

Don’t hesitate to be harsh and unpleasant if you must be. The world needs you to be a strong, clear-headed and better man. Don’t let the world down.
